Director of the Public Expenditure Evaluation Division
José María Casado was appointed as Director of the Public Spending Division by the Council of Ministers on September 25th, 2021, upon a proposal from the President of AIReF, Cristina Herrero.
José María holds a PhD from the London School of Economics, a master’s degree in Economics from University College London, a Diploma in Advanced Studies from the University of Zaragoza and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Extremadura. He is a senior economist at the Bank of Spain since 2009, working in the Directorate-General of Economic Affairs, Statistics and Research. Previously, he was responsible for the Evaluation of Public Policies at AIReF and the Assistant Coordinator of the institution’s Spending Review Programme. He was a lecturer at the Department of Foundations of Economic Analysis at the University School of Financial Studies and at the University of Zaragoza, a senior economist at the Bank of England, a research associate at FEDEA and an economist on the European Commission research project AGMEMOD in the period 2001-2004. His areas of research interest in which he has published various papers in international journals include the micro econometric evaluation of public policies, inequality, fiscal microsimulation, consumer behaviour and the financial situation of families.
