The Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF) today organised the third workshop with General Government representatives, focused, on this occasion, on the sustainability of public finances and, specifically, on the new framework of fiscal rules that would be applied from 2024 if the proposed reform of the Stability and Growth Pact presented by the European Commission is finally approved. The workshop included the attendance – in person or remotely – of more than 200 representatives from the different tiers of the General Government.
The President of AIReF, Cristina Herrero, opened the workshop, welcoming the fact that AIReF once again serves as a meeting point, a platform for dialogue and the exchange of ideas with all tiers of government. According to Cristina, this workshop is particularly opportune in light of the return to quantitative fiscal restrictions in 2024 and now that Spain will have to prepare a medium-term fiscal strategy to guarantee the sustainability of public finances.
The workshop was organised in three round-tables that addressed the reform of the European framework of fiscal governance, the reform of the national framework of governance, and the territorial dimension of Spain, with the singular features of a decentralised country. In these round tables, the Director of the Budget Analysis Division, Ignacio Fernández-Huertas, and the Director of the Economic Analysis Division, Esther Gordo, exchanged views with various General Government representatives
