The President of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), Cristina Herrero, took part today in a forum organised by the Diálogo Association, whose aim is to strengthen European integration through Spanish-French ties. Numerous French and Spanish companies from different sectors such as energy, transport and consultancy services, took part in the event. During her speech, the President explained AIReF’s mission and functions and referred to the current fiscal context, marked by the new governance framework that came into force in April.
Cristina Herrero explained that AIReF performs two key functions in the economy: fiscal supervision, one of its original functions since 2014, and the evaluation of public policies, a function it was commissioned with in 2017 and which has been stably incorporated into the institution’s regulatory framework. She also explained that AIReF is a unique institution in that it performs these functions independently, has powers over all the General Government (GG) authorities, carries out its supervisory function ex-ante and with a medium-term vision and seeks efficiency.
The President recalled that AIReF is a benchmark at a budgetary and public policy level, makes great efforts in terms of transparency and the provision of data and analysis, and promotes relations with all economic agents. In her words, it is more than a fiscal supervisor; it is an institution that acts as an observer and analyst and tries to pass on its analyses to society.
After her initial speech, a debate was opened between the attendees and the President of AIReF.
