The Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF) will publish the results of the first phase of the Spending Review program throughout the month of June. The Spending Review has been carried out for the first time in Spain by an independent institution based on data, the empirical evidence and the most successful experiences nationally and internationally.
In the 2017-2020 Stability Programme, sent in April 2017 to the European Commission, the Government expressly committed to continue gaining efficiency in public expenditure through a comprehensive review process monitoring the Public Administrations. The purpose of this broad spending review is to detect possible inefficiencies and overlaps between administrations.
AIReF drafted an Action Plan (approved by the Council of Ministers on 26 January 2018) identifying up to seven evaluation projects that affect both Autonomous Regions and the Central Government.
The Action Plan has been designed taking into account the common principles of the Eurogroup for “Spending Reviews” including a firm and lasting political commitment, the design and implementation, monitoring and communication, and coherence in budget planning.
